19th Century Silk Needlework
This embroidery and watercolor on silk picture was wrought by Rebecca Kent, who married John H. Munroe of Lexington in 1823. Considered to be a rare example of school girl academy art, this piece reflects an important component of early 19th century women's educational training and is an important and costly conservation initiative.
The textile, eglomise glass, and gilded frame are all in desperate need of conservation and restoration. The three-phase treatment consists of conservation of the textile, recreation of the reverse painting on glass, and re-gilding of the original frame.
