Mid-Century Marvels:
Bauhaus and Beyond

A CELEBRATION OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN
TO BENEFIT LEXINGTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY, FALL 2019
2019 marks the centennial of the Staatliches Bauhaus art school in Germany.
The Bauhaus (literally “building house”), founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius, lasted for only 14 years; its principles of functionality, simplicity, and innovation, however, live on in architecture,
furniture, and interior design.

In celebration of its centennial, we're offering behind-the-scenes, personal visits to
homes that reflect the functional elegance initiated by Bauhaus visionaries.

Bauhaus and Beyond: An Interpretive Tour of the Walter Gropius House, Lincoln

Thursday, September 12, 7 -9 PM
Limited to 25 people; $100

The finest embodiment of Walter Gropius’ philosophy stands on a hill in Lincoln and looks much as it did - inside and out - when the architect and his family moved in back in 1938. Join Peter Gittleman of Historic New England, a friend of the Gropius family, for an intimate and personal visit. Enjoy wine, refreshments, and period music as you marvel at the modernist marriage of form and function in architecture, materials, and furnishings.

Functional Elegance: A Personal View of the George and Christina Gamota Private Collection

Thursday, October 10,7 -9 PM
Limited to 20 people; $60

Over the last five decades, collectors Christina and George Gamota’s homes have been splashed across the pages of Glamour, Ladies’ Home Journal, and Boston magazines. With style and panache, they have integrated global treasures into their modern home, collecting everything from flea market finds to high-end modern furniture, paintings, and sculpture by Marcel Breuer, Harry Bertoia, and Charles and Ray Eames. Once strictly a modernist, Christina now believes life is too short to live amid just one period, and the eclectic result is a joyful interplay of styles. Join Christina to view the entire home as she discusses her decorating aesthetic. You will also be treated to champagne and her specially-prepared European dessert buffet honoring modern design icons. This is a treat for the senses not to be missed!

This event is SOLD OUT. To join the waiting list, please call the office at 781-862-1703.

Function and Family: A Mid-Century Modern Cocktail Party in a Walter Pierce Home

Saturday, November 2, 7 -9 PM
Limited to 100 people; $60

Lexington’s Peacock Farm was conceived in 1952 by architects Walter Pierce and Danforth Compton. Pierce lived in the neighborhood until his death in 2013, during which time he refined his modernist principles. This 1963 family home home in Shaker Glen was built according to plans designed by Walter Pierce for Peacock Farm*, and retains most of its original character-defining features, while remaining casual, comfortable, and inviting. Join the owners and your friends for a Mid-Century Modern-inspired cocktail party, with music and refreshments of the period, and a silent auction of accessories. Period clothing is also encouraged!

*Please note: If you received a paper invitation, the text describing this home is misleading. This home was built according to plans designed by Walter Pierce for Peacock Farm, but Pierce did not live in it, and it is not located at Peacock Farm. We apologize for any confusion the invitation text may have caused.
