This thirteen-star, 36” x 72” flag belonged to George E. Muzzey (1838-1896) and may have been carried by him during the Civil War.  Muzzey mustered into the 12th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, or Webster Regiment, on June 6, 1862 as Quartermaster-Sergeant, serving under his brother, Loring Muzzey,  who was the Regimental Quartermaster.  The 12th Massachusetts Regiment of Volunteers was noted for having the highest percentage of casualties at the Battle of Antietam in 1862, with 224 dead or wounded out of a total of 334 men.  Muzzey mustered out with the regiment on July 8, 1864 and returned to Lexington where he helped found the Lexington Minute Men and served as a Selectman in the 1890s.
