Book Group Meeting #2: The Pioneers by David McCullough

Tuesday, December 10, 6:00 PM, at the Depot

The Lexington Historical Society Book Group meets five times each year, and new members are always welcome!

This month's book examines the 1788 journey of Manasseh Cutler, a Massachusetts minister, to the Northwest Ohio Territory in a band led by Revolutionary War veteran Rufus Putnam. Setting out with lofty goals: freedom of religion, universal education, and the prohibition of slavery, Cutler, Putnam, and their families set out into the west to start a new town of their own. Through their harrowing tale McCullough shows that westward expansion "was, in some ways, a second phase of the American Revolution – a messy experiment, touched by high ideals and bitter conflicts, that still resonates in ways we’re only beginning to grasp" (Christian Science Monitor).

Includes catered dinner from Neillio's.

Stay tuned for our next book: Massachusetts in the Women Suffrage Movement by Barbara Berenson on January 14!
